Thursday 16/12/2010 until Thursday 10/02/2011- Joey Kötting - 'Reflexive'
As the title of the exhibition suggests, Kötting?s new work addresses issues of ego, id, and self-conscious inquiry. An inhabitant of both the physical world and cyberspace, Kötting embraces both spheres. A modern flâneur in the post-photographic era, he captures snapshots of textual references that evoke his place in the world. Graffiti, signage, emails and packaging are all places from which the artist?s birthday or initials can be culled. Kötting then takes these images as reference and, eschewing his previous photographic processes, uses ?watercolor as a darkroom? to create a number of oblique portrait paintings. Also included in the exhibition are a series of highly-reflective monochrome paintings. While these self-referential works evoke portraiture within the context of the exhibition, they also convey intimations of seeing oneself within the world. http://www.larissagoldston.comLarissa Goldston Gallery, New York
