Christopher Le Brun
Christopher Mark Le Brun was born in Portsmouth in 1951.
He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (DFA) in London from 1970-74 and at Chelsea School of Art (MA) from 1974-75.
Le Brun has exhibited in many significant surveys of international art, including Nuova Immagine Milan 1981, Zeitgeist Berlin 1982, and Avant-garde in the Eighties, Los Angeles 1987. Most recently he was included in Contemporary Voices, at the Museum of Modern Art New York in 2005.
From 1987-88 he received the D.A.A.D. award from the German government, living and working in Berlin for a year.
He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1996 and in 2000 became the Academy's first Professor of Drawing.
Le Brun is a former trustee of the Tate, the National Gallery, and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. He is currently a trustee of the Prince's Drawing School.
He is married to the painter Charlotte Verity. They have three children. He lives and works in London and Suffolk.
Christopher Le Brun (° 1951, Portsmouth, Engeland) is in de tachtiger jaren een vooraanstaand vertegenwoordiger van de nieuwe schilderkunst (New Image Painting). In zijn schilderijen verschijnen dwingende onderwerpen als donkere ruiters, cypressen en witte paarden in nachtelijke wouden die zijn fascinatie verraden voor de symbolistische schilders en de cultuurtraditie. Le Brun doet een voortdurend onderzoek naar de relatie tussen het figuratieve en het abstracte. Het is zijn ambitie om de tweestrijd tussen het schilderen op zich en een symbolische inhoud op te lossen. Omdat hij bovendien ook nog sterke bruggen bouwt met het verleden wordt Le Brun als Groot-Brittannië's belangrijkste postmodernist beschouwd. Vanuit zijn gedrevenheid om de picturale structuur te onderzoeken experimenteert hij sedert 1995 ook met was. Hij werkt enkele onderwerpen van zijn schilderijen zoals paarden, vleugels en manen driedimensionaal uit in brons.
