Hermann Nitsch
Hermann Nitsch (Vienna, Austria, 1938) founded the Orgien Mysterien Theater (OMT) in 1957. With the OMT he takes a step towards the realization of his ultimate aim: a global work of art which is to last for six days and which centres around the themes of the mystery play and orgy. The OMT resulted from Nitsch's involvement with culture and informal and abstract painting, but its origins also go back to the tradition of religious rituals. Nitsch produces his paintings in series. For example, preparing a performance for the OMT, he spills red paint on the canvas which he then works with his hands. For Nitsch, art means catharsis. Painting is an energetic process which emanates from direct expression. Red, as a symbol of joy, ecstasy, fire and blood, is his favourite colour. Nitsch is also one of the leading figures of the Wiener Aktionismus, a movement, which, like the 'happenings' of the sixties, sought to break new grounds. On the occasion of the world exhibition in 1992 in Seville, a retrospective exhibition of his work was organized, which then travelled to various cities, like Vienna, Rome, Luxembourg, Palma de Mallorca, Linz,...
Hermann Nitsch (°1938 Wenen, Oostenrijk) legt in 1957 de basis van het Orgien Mysterien Theater (OMT). Met het OMT werkt hij aan de verwezenlijking van zijn ultiem streefdoel, namelijk een totaalkunstwerk te creëren dat zes dagen duurt en waarin orgie en mysteriespel centraal staan. Het OMT is enerzijds ontstaan uit de nauwe betrokkenheid van Nitsch met zijn cultuur en met de informele en abstracte schilderkunst van de jaren vijftig. Anderzijds is de oorsprong van het OMT ook terug te voeren naar de traditie van religieuze rituelen. Zijn schilderijen ontstaan in reeksen, bijvoorbeeld als voorbereiding van de opvoering van een OMT giet hij rode verf op schildersdoek dat hij ook met zijn vingers bewerkt. Voor Nitsch betekent kunst katarsis. Schilderen is een energetisch proces dat uit de directe expressie volgt. Hij werkt hoofdzakelijk met de karakteriserende kleur rood als symbool van vreugde, extase, vuur en bloed. Hij is tevens één van de leidende figuren van het Weense Aktionisme dat aansluit bij de grensoverschrijdende 'happenings' van de jaren zestig. Naar aanleiding van de Wereldtentoonstelling van 1992 in Sevilla is er een retrospectieve van Nitsch georganiseerd die daarna verder reist naar Wenen, Rome, Luxemburg, Palma de Mallorca, Linz..
