Jean Le Gac
Jean Le Gac (°1936 Tamalis bij Alès, Frankrijk) creëert een permanent spel met realiteit en fictie. Hij onderzoekt de ambiguïteit van kunst en om dit te doen plaatst hij zich in de rol van verslaggever van schilderkunst zodat er in zijn werk een constante betrokkenheid is met "de schilder" en "het schilderen". Aanvankelijk schildert hij echter zelf niet maar kiest fotografie en tekst als uitdrukkingsmiddelen. Op de foto's zijn er slechts onbeschilderde of nauwelijks aangevatte doeken te zien en dikwijls wordt de toeschouwer op een verkeerd spoor gezet. Zo stelt Le Gac ook regelmatig tentoon in niet-geïnstitutionaliseerde ruimtes waar de dubbelzinnigheid van kunst zich manifesteert. In de tachtiger jaren maakt hij grote pasteltekeningen die een droomachtige indruk nalaten en in combinatie met foto's gepresenteerd worden. De meeste werken van Le Gac hebben een "wordt vervolgd" effect door de herhaling van thema's en voorstellingen.
Jean Le Gac (Tamalis near Alès, France, 1936) creates a permanent play of reality and fiction. To inquire into the ambiguity of art he assumes the role of a commentator on painting. His work therefore invariably demonstrates an involvement with 'the painter' and 'painting'. Initially he does not paint himself, but chooses photography and text to express himself. The pictures show empty paintings, or ones that have hardly been started. Frequently the public is given wrong clues, as when he exhibits his work in non-institutional surroundings, where the ambiguity of art becomes apparent. In the eighties he combines pictures and large pastels, which leave a dreamlike impression. The repetition of themes and images lend his work a sort of 'to be continued' effect.
