Vincent & Lawrence Malstaf

In this installation a strip of springsteel is connected to 2 motors. They are programmed to turn slowly with different speeds and directions. 2 contact mics make the torsion and tension in the steel audible. The scenario is repeated again and again. However the curls, motion and sound of the metal reveal an unstable order, repetitive yet unpredictable.

PAVILION is een monumentale openlucht installatie waarin grote banieren rond en tussen elkaar door cirkelen. Ze vormen een meanderende wolk van vloeiende oppervlakten die falen om een veilig onderdak te bieden en niet kunnen beschermen tegen de bedreigingen van de natuur of de door de mens gemaakte omgeving. Lawrence Malstaf - onder meer bekend door zijn spraakmakende interactieve projecten als Shrink - ontwikkelde PAVILION speciaal voor Festival a/d Werf. Het is zijn eerste installatie die zich in de openbare ruimte manifesteert: tijdens het festival pronkt het op het plantsoen voor de Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. Lawrence Malstaf maakt vooral omgevingsgevoelig werk of installaties waar de beschouwer deelnemer wordt of een essentieel onderdeel vormt van wat er gebeurt. In zijn werk bewegen muren, wordt de zwaartekracht getrotseerd en de performer vacuüm gezogen of een wervelstorm gesimuleerd. Op het afgelopen STRP festival in Eindhoven was de kunstenaar met maar liefst negen werken één van de belangrijkste gasten.

PAVILION is a monumental open air installation where banners circle around and between each other. It cannot offer a safe haven or shelter against outside threats. This work is not about making an object, it is about making a space, the surface is a means. Lawrence Malstaf - renowned for his much talked-about interactive projects such as Shrink - has developed PAVILION especially for Festival a/d Werf. It is the first installation of the Flemish artist to manifest itself in a public space: during the festival it will adorn the frontlawn of the Stadsschouwburg Utrecht. Lawrence Malstaf creates mostly pieces or installations that react to their surroundings and will make the spectator a participant or an essential part of what's going on. In his work walls move, gravity is defied, and the performer is sucked into a vacuum. It may even suggest a tornado.
