Jacques Charlier @ Bozar : 18.02 > 15.05.2005

18.02 > 15.05.2005
http://www.bozar.be/nl/expo_visionair.html#ArtemisKwartet

Eva Schlegel - Sri Lanka One World Foundation

Eva Schlegel was in Sri Lanka at the moment of the Tsunami. She and her husband survived, but everything what the One World Foundation has built up over the last decade has been destroyed. Together with Eva Schlegel and Galerie Krinzinger we want to spread this letter to support the projects of the One World Foundation.

Dear friends,
The tidal waves that left a trail of devastation in Sri Lanka have also destroyed the entire school and administrative buildings of the One World Foundation.
Over the past decade I have visited Sri Lanka a number of times. This country and its wonderful people have given me an enormous amount of energy for my work in my Vienna gallery. As a guest of the One World Foundation I have gotten to know the work of this exceptional non-profit organization that friends have been running with great commitment for over ten years. Several years ago I decided to sponsor a teacher and a school child from the One World Foundation as a sign of gratitude for all the energy this place has given me during my stays in Sri Lanka.
This very important institution has now been but all destroyed, at least in a material sense. I would now like to ask you to join me in making a donation to this project so that the school can be rebuilt. If you donate to this cause you will be making a direct contribution to a project whose development you can witness yourself if you ever travel to Sri Lanka. You are an important pillar of this initiative, regardless of how much you contribute.
I would very much appreciate any support.
Dr Ursula Krinzinger

The ONE WORLD FOUNDATION (“one world“ as opposed to the second or third world) was established in 1995. Josef Ortner and Kathrin Messner, the initiators of the Museum in Progress, in 1995, worked together with local authorities to create a foundation for promoting education and communication in Sri Lanka.
At about the same time a burgeoning wellness industry was emerging on the southwest coast in connection with the growing demand for ayurveda treatments. This opened up a promising new source of income for the country. Unfortunately, however, the local population has hardly been able to benefit from this development. This is where the ONE WORLD FOUNDATION has taken the initiative in setting up Free Education Units for children and young people from the immediate surroundings. This concept was based on a guesthouse and a center for ayurvedic treatments. The proceeds from both were to be used entirely for financing the adjoined school.
On a piece of land in the village of Wathuregama, located in immediate vicinity to the guesthouse, a number of simple buildings were erected, providing room for 500 schoolchildren to be taught by 22 teachers.
The educational project comprises a preschool unit for the youngest children, computer training as well as arts and crafts and English classes.
APPEAL FOR DONATIONS
The one world foundation in Sri Lanka was also hard hit be the tidal wave on 26 December 2004. Fortunately the owf has no dead to mourn, everyone was able to get to safety in time before the tsunami struck.
However, most of the one world foundation facilities in Wathuregama have been completely destroyed, including all the school buildings - what is still standing is badly damaged.
It is now a question of starting reconstruction so that the children and young people in the owf school and adults in the owf occupational training programmes can continue their education. This is more important that ever in view of the negative, long-term, economic consequences of this natural disaster. It is about the livelihoods of the teachers and staff of the one world foundation and not least about being able to assist the most needy directly.
Concrete humanitarian help is necessary for this. This needs money. The one world foundation is therefore appealing for donations to:
