KIKI SMITH: A Gathering, 1980 - 2005

NL Kiki Smith (°1954) bouwde haar internationale reputatie als beeldend kunstenaar op haar rauwe en obsessieve maar tevens integere en poëtische verkenning van het lichaam. Ze toont delen van het lichaam, vergroot het uit, deconstrueert en herleest vitale functies. De keuze van fragiel materiaal - stof, plaaster, glas, papier - intensifieert de zintuiglijke ervaring en onthult sociale, historische en spirituele implicaties. Er is echter geen sprake van eufemisme noch van exhibitionisme. Cruelty, violence, disease, disaster, birth, death ... form our daily life. Kiki Smith confronteert ons met de grenzen van het zijn en de onzekerheid van het leven. Het leven, universeel verankerd in het sublieme mysterie van het lichaam. Woorden verschijnen en de muren worden ingenomen door vogels, vleermuizen en sterren. "I went from the microscopic to organs to systems to skins to the religious body to cosmologies". Tekeningen, sculpturen en prints van dieren komen nu frequent in haar werk voor. Kiki Smith creëert een compleet universum.

EN Since she emerged in the early 1980s, Kiki Smith has developed into one of the most fascinating and original artists of our time and is now a major figure in the world of contemporary art. Her provocative meditations on the human condition, the body, and the realms of myth, spirituality, and narrative have resulted in works of extraordinary power and uncommon beauty. Kiki Smith will present a "gathering" (to use the artist's word) of the broad variety of media she has explored in her career, including sculpture in plaster, bronze, paper, glass, porcelain, and other materials, installations, prints, drawings, photographs, multiples, jewelry, artist's books, and film and video works. Orgies Mysteries Theatre

German retrospective in the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin

NL Hermann Nitsch (°1938 Wenen, Oostenrijk) legt in 1957 de basis van het Orgien Mysterien Theater (OMT). Met het OMT werkt hij aan de verwezenlijking van zijn ultiem streefdoel, namelijk een totaalkunstwerk te creëren dat zes dagen duurt en waarin orgie en mysteriespel centraal staan. Het OMT is enerzijds ontstaan uit de nauwe betrokkenheid van Nitsch met zijn cultuur en met de informele en abstracte schilderkunst van de jaren vijftig. Anderzijds is de oorsprong van het OMT ook terug te voeren naar de traditie van religieuze rituelen. Zijn schilderijen ontstaan in reeksen, bijvoorbeeld als voorbereiding van de opvoering van een OMT giet hij rode verf op schildersdoek dat hij ook met zijn vingers bewerkt. Voor Nitsch betekent kunst katarsis. Schilderen is een energetisch proces dat uit de directe expressie volgt. Hij werkt hoofdzakelijk met de karakteriserende kleur rood als symbool van vreugde, extase, vuur en bloed. Hij is tevens één van de leidende figuren van het Weense Aktionisme dat aansluit bij de grensoverschrijdende 'happenings' van de jaren zestig.

EN From 30 November 2006 to 22 January 2007 the Nationalgalerie Berlin will be the guest of the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin. The Verein der Freunde der Nationalgalerie is staging the first retrospective in Germany devoted to the complete works of the Viennese Actionist. Hermann Nitsch (b. 1938) has developed the Orgies Mysteries Theatre, a theatrical form that combines painting, music, drama and performance with liturgical-religious elements. One of the key fundaments of the Orgies Mysteries Theatre are the mystery feasts of antiquity, which enacted a purifying catharsis - a pivotal concept that continues to significantly influence the artist's work today. Hermann Nitsch remains one of the most controversial contemporary artists. His work provokes protest and antagonism. It polarises the public. The curator Britta Schmitz (Nationalgalerie) has developed an exhibition concept tailor-made for 18 rooms of the Martin-Gropius-Bau, one which in particular creates an ideal setting for Hermann Nitsch's large, multipart works. Loans from numerous museums and private collections abroad ensure that certain works can now be seen in Berlin for the first time in decades. The works on show include key pieces from Nitsch's oeuvre, such as the "Existenzaltar", 1960, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Vienna, nine "Stations of the Cross" and the "splatter paintings", which determined the artist's distinctive "signature" for decades and decisively shaped his style between Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting. Other highlights of the exhibition are the famous "Geißelwand", 1963, Museum Ludwig, Cologne as well as the "Asolo Raum" and the "Schömer Raum", 1973 and 1998, respectively, from the Austrian private collection Essl. The Berlin exhibition in the Martin-Gropius-Bau will also feature numerous musical scores and drawings, photo documentation and films of earlier actionist performances. A special music room as well as a fragrance-room complete the retrospective on the eclectic productivity of this exceptional artist. On a 18 meter screen the visitor will witness Nitsch's 122nd action of the Orgies Mysteries Theatre in the Wiener Burgtheater (Vienna). The documentation of the action will be played in its full length of nearly four hours. This first retrospective on the work of Hermann Nitsch in Germany provides the public and the media with a unique opportunity to appreciate in detail the complete works in all their diversity and the important positions of Viennese Actionism and the Orgies Mysteries Theatre in 20th century art. A catalogue will be published by Verlag Walther König.

NL Bij de installaties van Lawrence Malstaf (°1972, Brugge) is de ervaring 'being in the middle' van groot belang. In zijn installaties kan de bezoeker zelf concrete of abstracte situaties ervaren. In plaats van de indirecte ervaring van de getuige bij een performance (iemand anders' beleving) of een foto (een uitwendig object), wordt de bezoeker een essentieel lichamelijk onderdeel van wat er gebeurt en beleeft hij of zij dit van binnen uit, in plaats van het te denken of te interpreteren van buiten af. Dit laatste komt pas nadien. Het zijn dus geen statische beelden of momentopnamen. Het zijn mechanismen die een proces op gang brengen, materialen, voorwerpen of een ruimte in beweging brengen . Het zijn levende installaties en in die zin zijn ze vergelijkbaar met een performance. Het zijn handelingen in 'loop' met een tijdsduur die weliswaar afhankelijk is van de bezoeker.
