Jan Verbruggen
The surfaces and volumes in paintings by Jan Verbruggen are tilted in space, without holding on to a conventional perspective. Strange figures contemplate landscapes together with the viewer, or are immersed in the scene. Orientation is central in this process, like a map is essential to travel. Not only the artist is searching for place and time, the spectator is challenged to think.
The artists’ studio is a space for research where the artist uses fragmented information, texts, pictures and drawings to re-construct a painting. Bright, primary colors contrast with a deep blue, almost transparent background. Verbruggen is convinced that contrasts facilitate thinking. Distinct colors structure the paintings. The graphic power of the color enhances the pattern of lines and shapes and thus determines the composition of the painting.
Since 2011 the painting and installation-project ‘NOMAD, The Deconstruction of Place’ travels with Jan Verbruggen. NOMAD functions as a meta-structure and transforms towards the specificity of the site where it appears. ‘NOMAD, The Deconstruction of Place’, investigates physical space at the crossover point of actual space and painterly space. NOMAD is re-created by spacing red, yellow and blue blocs and adapting the composition towards the architecture or the available space.

Jan Verbruggen (°1980, Humbeek) werkt en leeft in Brussel sinds 2004. Na het voltooien van zijn opleiding als Meester in de schilderkunst (Sint Lukas Hogeschool Brussel 2000 - 2004) begon hij aan een schilderkundig project, gebaseerd op ruimte en het onbesliste probleem van oriëntatie in onze tijd. In zijn eerdere werken, “The will to score!” (2005 – 2006) en “Radar” (2006), staat de foto en zijn context centraal. In zijn recentere werken, zoals bijvoorbeeld “The Mapreader” (2007 – 2008), wordt de foto als vertrekpunt in vraag gesteld vanuit een meer formele benadering van het medium verf in relatie tot het sterk verhalende karakter van zijn schilderijen.
...een imaginaire topografie, die de toeschouwer verwart en hem zijn alledaagse, doelgerichte oriëntatie ontneemt. De geselecteerde werken ontsluiten een doorleefde ruimte, en bieden een tegenwicht aan een wereldbeeld waarin het onderscheid tussen het reële en imaginaire steeds problematischer wordt. Uiteindelijk gaat het om een artistieke verkenning van de relatie tussen de ‘kaart’ en het ‘terrein’.

Jan Verbruggen (1980, Humbeek) travaille et vit à Bruxelles depuis 2004. Après l’achèvement de sa maîtrise en arts visuels (Sint Lukas Hogeschool Brussel, 2000 – 2004), il s’est engagé dans un projet de peinture basé sur l’espace et la question illimitée de l’orientation à notre époque. Dans ses travaux précédents, “The will to score” (2005-2006) et “Radar” (2006), la photo et son contexte sont centraux. Dans ses travaux plus récents, tels que “The Mapreader” (2007-2008), la photo est mise en question comme point de départ, à partir d’une approche plus formelle du medium peinture en relation avec le caractère fortement narratif de ses tableaux.
...une topographie imaginaire, en désorientant le spectateur dans sa vie quotidienne qui est axée sur des objectifs. Les œuvres sélectionnées ouvrent sur une espace vécue, et s’opposent à une vision de monde dans laquelle la distinction entre le réel et l’imaginaire devient de plus en plus problématique. C’est dans ce contexte que l’artiste nous offre une exploration sur la relation entre le plan et le territoire.
