Jan Verbruggen
Not to know where we are is frightening and not having a sense of place is highly unpleasant.
Jan Verbruggen (°1980, Humbeek) works and lives in Brussels since 2004. After graduating as a Master in Visual Arts (Sint Lukas Hogeschool Brussel, 2000 – 2004) he started a painting project, based on space and the contemporary undecided problem of orientation. In his earlier work, "The will to score!" (2005 – 2006) and "Radar" (2006), the photograph and its context are contemporary focal points. In later paintings, for example "The Mapreader" (2007 – 2008), the photographic image as point of departure is questioned through a more formal approach of the medium paint, this in relationship to the strong narrative nature of his paintings.
...an imaginary topography, deliberately confusing the viewer and disorientating him from his goal-oriented everyday existence. The selected works open up to an embodied space, counterbalancing a worldview in which the distinction between the real and the imaginary becomes increasingly problematic. Ultimately, they offer us an artistic exploration of the relation between the ‘map’ and the ‘territory’.
Niet weten waar we zijn is een beangstigende situatie en het gevoel geen persoonlijke ruimte te hebben is hoogst onaangenaam.
Jan Verbruggen (°1980, Humbeek) werkt en leeft in Brussel sinds 2004. Na het voltooien van zijn opleiding als Meester in de schilderkunst (Sint Lukas Hogeschool Brussel 2000 - 2004) begon hij aan een schilderkundig project, gebaseerd op ruimte en het onbesliste probleem van oriëntatie in onze tijd. In zijn eerdere werken, “The will to score!” (2005 – 2006) en “Radar” (2006), staat de foto en zijn context centraal. In zijn recentere werken, zoals bijvoorbeeld “The Mapreader” (2007 – 2008), wordt de foto als vertrekpunt in vraag gesteld vanuit een meer formele benadering van het medium verf in relatie tot het sterk verhalende karakter van zijn schilderijen.
...een imaginaire topografie, die de toeschouwer verwart en hem zijn alledaagse, doelgerichte oriëntatie ontneemt. De geselecteerde werken ontsluiten een doorleefde ruimte, en bieden een tegenwicht aan een wereldbeeld waarin het onderscheid tussen het reële en imaginaire steeds problematischer wordt. Uiteindelijk gaat het om een artistieke verkenning van de relatie tussen de ‘kaart’ en het ‘terrein’.
Ne pas savoir où nous nous trouvons est une situation angoissante et le sentiment de ne pas avoir d’espace personnel est extrêmement désagréable.
Jan Verbruggen (1980, Humbeek) travaille et vit à Bruxelles depuis 2004. Après l’achèvement de sa maîtrise en arts visuels (Sint Lukas Hogeschool Brussel, 2000 – 2004), il s’est engagé dans un projet de peinture basé sur l’espace et la question illimitée de l’orientation à notre époque. Dans ses travaux précédents, “The will to score” (2005-2006) et “Radar” (2006), la photo et son contexte sont centraux. Dans ses travaux plus récents, tels que “The Mapreader” (2007-2008), la photo est mise en question comme point de départ, à partir d’une approche plus formelle du medium peinture en relation avec le caractère fortement narratif de ses tableaux.
...une topographie imaginaire, en désorientant le spectateur dans sa vie quotidienne qui est axée sur des objectifs. Les œuvres sélectionnées ouvrent sur une espace vécue, et s’opposent à une vision de monde dans laquelle la distinction entre le réel et l’imaginaire devient de plus en plus problématique. C’est dans ce contexte que l’artiste nous offre une exploration sur la relation entre le plan et le territoire.
